Students commit to staying green

Posted

The Recycling Committee at Barnum Woods Elementary School has been very busy spreading awareness about the impact of bottles and caps on wildlife and the Earth, while collecting recyclables as they move into the second year of the school’s recycling program.

The Recycling Committee students, comprised of fourth and fifth graders, and their advisor, Lissette Pellegrino, have expanded the program to the entire school. Twice a week, the students collect recyclables from all of the classrooms using recycling containers on wheels. In the cafeteria, there are two recycling bins: one for water bottles, and one for drink bottles, which are recycled separately. The caps from water bottles are also collected in a separate bin, which are recycled into beauty product containers by the company Aveeno.

This “Going Green” initiative is looking into the logistics of expanding the program in the future.
