Very few high school basketball teams on Long Island won more road games, and none played as many games away from home than East Rockaway’s boys in 2012-13. With the high school off limits after Hurricane Sandy, the Rocks were unable to play within the friendly confines of the Rock Palace.

The Malverne and East Rockaway girls basketball programs have storied pasts. The Mules have earned eight Nassau County titles, while the Lady Rocks have picked up nine. Throw in the fact that the two schools are just a couple miles apart on Ocean Avenue, and you have a one of more natural rivalries in the county.

A preseason trip to North Carolina that included a couple of scrimmages and a practice session at Duke University’s famous Cameron Indoor Stadium provided Molloy’s men’s basketball team with an opportunity to bond on and off the court.

Things got off to an inauspicious start for the Pride. First, coach Mo Cassara was forced to suspend Connecticut transfer Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and Penn State transfer Taran Buie for the opening two games for violating team rules. Then last week, Shaquille Stokes, Jimmy Hall, Dallas Anglin, and Kentrell Washington were arrested for allegedly stealing laptop computers, iPads and other items from dorm rooms. The university suspended the four players for the team and from attending classes. Stokes and Hall were both starters.
