In a high school auditorium, you usually find groups of bustling adolescents sitting in the rows, but on Monday, parents gathered in the Lynbrook High School auditorium to voice their frustrations about what they describe as illegal activity among local youth. Lynbrook and East Rockaway officials, along with members of the Nassau County Police Department’s 4th Precinct, were in the hot seat as many residents complained about disruptive youth who, they said, hang out, drink and cause mischief near Waverly Avenue.

At the third meeting of the newly-formed Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway, held on June 24, an urgent request was made from the Coalition steering committee’s “Expanding Opportunities for Kids” Task Force team leaders Kristen O’Hagan and Cathy Tierney for parents to volunteer as responsible adult chaperones for currently planned Summer 2010 recreational activities for the village’s young people.

The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway took its first major steps on May 20 by electing its steering committee officers, announcing the appointment of its first task force team leader, adopting its mission statement, and authorizing such basic items as opening a bank account and a post office box. The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway became an official organization within the village of East Rockaway on April 29, forming an unprecedented alliance between the village and the school district.
With Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher at the helm, the meeting was attended by dozens of interested parents, school, PTA and village officials, and concerned residents.

Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher has invited the public to attend a meeting on April 29 to help launch a new village organization, Coalition for Youths in East Rockaway. Meagher said he hopes the community-wide effort will help to educate parents and their children about the dangers of substance abuse and offer healthy, village-sponsored activities and programs for young people.
