Bank heist in East Rockaway

Chase employees locked in vault; police seek two suspects

Posted

Police were looking for two men who robbed the Chase Bank branch at 111 Main St. in East Rockaway on Monday, brandishing handguns and wearing disguises.

The suspects, one dressed as a FedEx employee and the other as a Chase employee, entered the bank at 6:15 p.m., shortly after it closed for business. One of the men forced an employee into an office, while the other tied two employees’ hands and forced them into the vault.

The subjects used the bank manager’s car to drive away with an undisclosed amount of cash. None of the bank’s employees were injured. The car was later recovered.

After police arrived, they began interviewing the employees inside the bank. The workers’ relatives started to gather at the scene by 7 p.m., concerned for their family members’ safety. “I just want to make sure they’re OK,” said a man who identified himself only as a relative of an employee. “I got here as soon as I heard.”

The suspect dressed in the FedEx uniform was described as a black man approximately 30 years old, 6 feet tall with a medium build, and was wearing a dark baseball-style cap and sunglasses. The second man, who was dressed in a dark suit and tie, was described as black, 35 to 40, 6 feet tall with a stocky build, and was wearing a flat Kangol-style cap.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS.
