Thanks to Mezzanote’s Robin and Frank Cristo, and Edwin Franco, who have partnered up with catering guru, Ed Closs, one need not be a member of Lawrence Village Country Club to dine there, go dancing, have cocktails under the stars, and bask in spectacular surroundings. Mezza on the Green offers it all, from its phenomenal 16-day wet-aged steaks, to luxurious lunching at affordable pricing.

But that’s not all. Each Wednesday features an evening theme (Latin night, Reggae, Oldies, etc.) with live entertainment and a Tapas menu to match. Dancing takes place both inside and out. There’s a bar and table seating on the patio. As the weather gets cooler, entertainment nights will move to the weekends. Offering an enormous ballroom, a local upscale night spot is now available to the entire community. Also, just open is the Mezza Café, an old time Brooklyn style “candy store” with outside barbecuing. Commuters can stop by for coffee from 6 AM on.

Simply put, our dining experience at Mezza on the Green was the ultimate in every way. We opted for window seating, which overlooks the exquisitely manicured golf course. Menus were laminated onto personal wooden slates. Service was impeccable yet warm and friendly. Arriving first was a luscious loaf of herb-infused crusted homemade bread, and a bottle of sparkling water.

Mezza chefs have truly mastered sauces, as were indicated by Mussels Sambucca Style, Jumbo Shrimp Risotto Lemoncello, and Orange Roughy with amazing sauce based on juices from Blood Oranges. Each was clearly the essence of its name without overpowering. Asian Style Calamari, served in a Chinese food carton with chopsticks, offered tender sweet and sour glazed ringlets crowning a nest of julienne vegetables and rice noodles. Steaks are U.S. Prime, cooked on an 1800°F Montague grill, boasting a flavorful seared outer layer while retaining natural juices. Queen Sirloin was grilled au naturale, while Cowboy Rib Steak was rubbed with spicy Southwestern herbs. Crisp Sweet Potato Fries drizzled with caramel sauce were amazing. Creamed Spinach was based with an Alfredo Sauce.

Don’t forgo dessert, and figure that a table a four will have enough sharing these. The Napoleon measured about eight inches high – feathery light phyllo pastry around layers chocolate pudding and whipped cream. Apple Crisp arrived sizzling on a (fajita) platter, sided with a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

Dinner prices range from $19 “Lite-Bite Selections,” and $29 Fish, Chicken or Veal entrees, which include a Caesar or house salad and Israeli Cous Cous, to the (grilled) Meats - $24 for two Center-cut French Onion Pork Chops to $89 for Porter House for Two – which come with a salad and a baked regular or sweet potato. Appetizers are $7 to $18; salads are $9 to $15. The “Before the Tee” menu (brunch or lunch) offers omelets, soups, wraps, sandwiches and thin-crusted pizzas from $4 for Chicken Soup to $12.95 for a Nova Platter with fries or grilled vegetables, or a Shrimp Teriyaki Wrap with chips and cole slaw. If you dined at Mezza last winter when they first opened, you’ll note that prices have been lowered and more is now included.

Mezza on the Green is open from Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:30 AM. Dinner starts at 6 PM Tuesday through Saturday and 5 PM on Sunday. Catering is available for events up to 300 people.
