Lynbrook cops recognize suspect

Lynbrook Police caught a lucky break — and used their skills of keen observation — when a man who had been arrested for a separate crime was recognized as the same suspect in a burglary that took place on Jan. 11 in East Meadow.

Emania Shephard, 50, of Hillside Avenue in Freeport was brought in to police headquarters on unknown separate charges on Feb. 1 — and ended up being later charged in connection with the burglary of a doctor’s office on Jan. 16.

In that first case, detectives said that a black male in his late 30s or early 40s entered a doctor’s office located at 611 Merrick Avenue. After removing several items from the office, including a set of car keys, the suspect exited the offices and stole a New York state “FLY” car used by fire departments. The car, whose owner is a 47-year-old male, was found abandoned in Uniondale on Jan.16 and subsequently returned to its owner. The entire incident was captured on video and was later reviewed by investigators.

Shephard was recognized by a Lynbrook police officer from a still photographer taken from the surveillance video. He was charged with 2nd degree burglary, six counts of 3rd degree burglary, two counts of 3rd degree grand larceny, and two counts of petit larceny.

Suspect brought in after two year investigation

A two-year investigation came to fruition last week as Fifth Squad Detectives apprehended a suspect in a burglary at the Smoker’s Choice in Lynbrook.

Roger Earl, 51, of 57th Avenue, Corona, Queens, was arrested February 2 in connection with a burglary that occurred on Nov. 21, 2009. According to police, on that date, two black males approximately 40 years entered the Smoker’s Choice at 350 Sunrise Highway with a dark revolver and threatened an employee, eventually tying his hands.

The suspects then stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, along with several cartons of cigarettes, before fleeing the scene. The employee was later able to free himself and escaped the incident unscathed.

Fifth Squad, along with the Nassau County and Federal Fugitive Squads, was able to locate Earl in association with the burglary and arrested him without incident at his residence. Earl, who has been charged with 1st and 2nd degree robbery, was arraigned the day of his capture. It is believed that the other suspect from the burglary is still at large.
