East Rockaway board to discuss overriding tax cap

Posted

The East Rockaway Village Board voted on Dec. 12 to schedule a public hearing about overriding the first-ever two percent property tax levy cap at their Jan. 9 regular meeting at Village Hall.

Mayor Francis T. Lenahan and village trustees will hear public comment and are expected to vote on if the board can override the cap, which was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in June.

The cap limits the amount a village board or school district can increase tax levies annually by 2 percent or the consumer price index (rate of inflation.)
The Lynbrook Village Board adopted a law in October to have an option to override the cap. Mayor Bill Hendrick and the board stressed that the law did not mean they would exceed the cap, but only have the choice to do so, if necessary. Their amendment is enacted for a one-year period, said Lynbrook Village Administrator John Giordano.

An East Rockaway village representative confirmed the hearing, but did not provide further information.
