On Sunday, August 12, the East Rockaway Fire Department hosted production staff from Co-Oper 8 Marketing Group to film T.V. commercials to be aired in the near future. This commercial video, along with numerous photos that were shot, are all products resulting from a 2010 $700,000 SAFER grant that was procured by the ERFD for membership recruitment and retention.

Production staff was on location in Bay Park where department members assembled from engine and truck companies, as well as extrication and rescue squad personnel. Scenarios were set up using the aerial ladder, hose lines, an overturned car, the jaws of life and EMTs, all in a natural environment, where film crews were able to record what the department members routinely do to protect life and property. ERFD’s new fireboat was deployed to demonstrate both a victim rescue and marine firefighting techniques. Additional filming was done at fire headquarters where members were photographed for brochures and signs, and others were interviewed on film for inclusion in the commercials.

This program addresses membership recruitment and retention through rewards such as tuition and fuel reimbursements to attempt to entice new volunteers to join the department and provides incentives for them to stay active. Thus far, the program has been very successful in bolstering the number of new members to join the East Rockaway Fire Department. With the implementation of new brochures for distribution at various events and locations, the creation and posting of new signage around town and the airing of these television commercials on Cablevision and FIOS, it is hoped that our ranks will continue to grow.

The East Rockaway Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization comprised of men and women of all ages who provide fire protection and emergency medical services to the residents of East Rockaway, Bay Park, Angle Sea and Hewlett Point. They are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and provide full training to all members, free of charge.
