Addressing a request from concerned school officials and parents, East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said that a request to make Marion Street a one-way road during school hours is “being put on hold.”
“At the moment we have no plan of action,” he said. Romano and village officials have yet to receive the petition, Village Clerk Patty Renner said, but were made aware of its existence. She noted that action may be taken in the future.
Romano also said that a traffic study several years ago concluded that it would not be feasible to make Marion Street a one-way, but added “we will increase enforcement there., including ticketing cars that are blocking driveways and marking tires of cars that are parked illegally.
Ivy Reilly, a mother of two students at the school, said that she does not think enforcement is enough. “That’s a nice political answer that doesn’t solve the problem,” she said.
Reilly said that increasing enforcement on a daily basis “sounds like an expensive endeavor,” and that it would be more cost effective for officials to make Marion Street a one-way road, much like streets near St. Raymond’s Parochial School on Atlantic Avenue.
