Lynbrook High School’s student newspaper, Horizon, won a total of five awards from the Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) annual competition, including a Silver Award for Best All-Around Publication. This competition accepts entries from student publications from all over New York State.

Lynbrook students also garnered several individual awards. Amanda Tannor LHS Class of 2009, won a Silver Award for Best Use of Advertising. Matt Wohlmacher’s article, entitled “Lunatics Take Over the Gym,” received a Bronze Award for Sports Features. Kasey Bury received Honorable Mention for Sports Photography and Rebecca Marks earned Honorable Mention in the Columnist category.

Horizon’s student staff members, under the direction of faculty advisor Jessica Sanders, have consistently brought home high honors from this annual competition. They have also won top honors at the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards.

Lynbrook High School offers a college-accredited course in journalism through Molloy College, in which many of the Horizon staff members learn the fundamentals of journalism. Some students work on the paper as part of their coursework, while others contribute as a club activity.
