The East Rockaway Fire Department was called to a working fire at a two story, two-family home on Ocean Avenue at around 2 p.m. last Saturday.

According to Chief Ed Reicherter, the fire started on the second floor

of the house, but, he said, the residents were out safely by the time his department arrived on the scene.

“Flames were shooting out of two three windows when we arrived on the scene,” said Reicherter. “It was a difficult fire ... it was hard to get the hose lines up that narrow stairway.” The top floor was severly damaged, he said, and the ground floor had smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office. The Lynbrook, Rockville Centre and Oceanside fire departments provided mutual aid.
