A dozen students were named “triathletes” at a “Fly With the Owls” triathlon on Aug. 25 at Greis Park as part of the organization’s middle school triathlon mentoring program, sponsored by the Lynbrook Runner’s Shop, Vincent’s Restaurant, K-Swiss, and Long Island Tri Coach and PowerBar. All of the participants were declared winners of the races that consisted of swimming, bike riding and running.

Each triathlete was paired with a member of the cross -country track team of Adelphi University. The Adephi athletes also served as course guides and personal cheerleaders, said Cathy Papandrew, Owl’s founder and Lynbrook board of education president. “Congratulations … they should be so proud of their accomplishment,” Papandrew said.

The students trained hard all summer for the race with their volunteer coaches. The triathletes cheered and supported each other throughout the process, said the program’s director Kathleen Hannan. The triathletes received a finishers medal recognizing their accomplishment.
