Former senator reflects on bin Laden's killing

First thoughts on the killing of Osama bin Laden from Herald columnist Sen. Al D’Amato:

I think many people thought there was little, if any, chance of bringing Osama bin Laden to justice in our lifetime. The announcement of his demise is welcome news and certainly demonstrates that our nation has the wherewithal and the ability to deal with the most vicious terrorist thugs who threaten our nation’s families and loved ones.

Three cheers for the brave men and women who serve our nation and were vigilant in their defense of our freedom, and to President Obama for his determination, and for never losing sight of our ultimate goal in the war on terror: to bring about a measure of justice for all those who were murdered by bin Laden and his cronies.

In our moment of triumph, let’s not forget that the war against these terrorists is far from won. We must continue to be vigilant, firm and ever ready to protect our nation, and we must never surrender our freedom to the threats or assaults by maniacal ideologues.

In my column next week, I’ll discuss the aftermath of bin Laden’s death. God bless America!
