High spirits at Lynbrook graduation

Posted

Though the threat of rain prompted the district to move the Lynbrook High School graduation indoors, the change of venue did not dampen the spirits of the seniors or their guests as the 240 graduates proudly marched down the aisle of the high school gym amid the cheers of family and friends.

Principal Joseph Rainis noted the graduates’ remarkable achievements in his opening remarks, including their acceptances to more than 220 colleges and universities and more than $16 million in scholarships.

Valedictorian Daniel Kramer likened his classmates’ years as Lynbrook students to the journey of Phileas Fogg in Jules Vernes’s novel “Around the World in 80 Days.” “The world is a big place, with endless things to offer, as long as we are willing to make the journey,” Kramer said in his speech. “The moment Mr. Fogg made his bet is very much like the moment we face now. We are rising to the challenge, making a wager of sorts, that we can all walk into adulthood with our heads held high and ready for success.”

Salutatorian Matt Gus summed up the feelings of many of his fellow graduates when he said, “Too often, we’ve defined our lives with three short words: ‘I can’t wait.’

“We spend so much time looking toward the future that sometimes we forget to enjoy the present,” Gus said. “Always remember, there is more than one path to success, and however far away from these paths you think you may have drifted, you have over 250 great people to help you.”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Santo Barbarino offered the graduates advice. “Focus on the details, but remember to see the big picture, too,” Barbarino said. “Listen to all sides and think before you form an opinion. Lead good and caring lives. Help those who need you. Do not consider yourself invincible. Love your family, and remember to tell them you love them.”

Board of Education trustees handed out diplomas to the graduates. In an emotional moment, Trustee William Kayen congratulated his son, Jacob, as he accepted his diploma.

There were plenty of magical moments during the ceremony, including the triumphant graduates tossing their green and yellow mortarboards in the air. Their expressions were full of joy, and cheers erupted from every corner of the gym.

Then families, friends and administrators watched as graduates finished their ending procession, walking into their future.
