‘Digger’ lived in Lynbrook, East Rockaway

Posted

Everett Janes was known throughout East Rockaway and Lynbrook as “Digger” because of his passion for the bay and for digging clams. “You would always find him tinkering around with an engine whether it was a boat or a car,” said his daughter, Susie Torborg. “He enjoyed having a good time and was often the life of the party.”

Janes died on June 20 at the age of 87.

Born on Aug. 27, 1923, in Brooklyn, Janes moved to Burtis Street in Lynbrook and graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1941. In 1943, he joined the Army and served in the 8th Armored Division Tank Corps. After coming home as a decorated WW II veteran for his heroic efforts during the Battle of the Bulge, he worked for over 30 years as an engineer for Grumman Aerospace.

Janes started his fire service career in 1946 when he joined Lynbrook Hose Company No. 1 where he served as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant before moving to East Rockaway. On Feb. 5, 1952, he joined East Rockaway Fire Department Vigilant Engine Company No. 1, and was one of the founding members of the Floodlight Squad, and served as the squad’s first captain. He also served, with distinction, on the Annual Department Parade and Drill Committee for many years, and was the department electrician, maintaining the alarm boxes and sirens. Janes was awarded the rank of honorary chief in recognition of his 50 years of service to the East Rockaway Fire Department. With his time in Lynbrook and East Rockaway, he had a total of 65 years in the fire service. In the past, he was also an active member of the ERA Party and Commuters Club.

Everett married the love of his life, Agnes Peter (Babe) on July 14, 1949. They have four children: Diane DeSantis, Susie Torborg, Joanne Janes, and ex-captain John Janes. He was the father-in-law to ex-captain John DeSantis, ex-chief Gene Torborg and Jena Janes. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: ex-captain Gene Torborg, John DeSantis, firefighter Scott Torborg, Melissa DeSantis, 2nd Lieutenant Gregg Torborg, firefighter Suzie Torborg, and Emma Janes. He was the proud great-grandfather of Tara Torborg and Kaylee Torborg.

He was a valued member of the community for many years and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
