Neighbors helping neighbors

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my most heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support that has been shown to my family and to me as we mourn the death of Kevin Dowd, a beloved father, son, friend and active member of the community.

The people of our great community have rallied around my sons and me in true Lynbrook fashion, demonstrating the qualities that make living in this town so terrific. It’s why I’m so proud to boast that I’m a lifelong Lynbrook resident.

There have been so many heartwarming moments when I have been moved to tears by the compassion and genuine concern shown in both little and big ways by our neighbors, school district teachers, administrators and staff, local charitable organizations as well as virtual strangers who were moved to help because someone told them about our family.

This past Friday a group of very wonderful people organized a benefit they called Neighbors Helping Neighbors. It was a spectacular evening filled with laughter, music and food, and the halls of the VFW were overflowing with the true spirit of generosity. Those who were there said it felt like a modern-day version of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” as so many community members assembled with the common goal of helping a fellow neighbor out. I am grateful for the financial support that was offered to my family, and the generous donations will help defray the ever-rising cost of college education for my boys.

We all struggle with our daily lives and perhaps sometimes we feel overwhelmed and isolated. An event like this prove that we are never really in this alone, and that we are connected as neighbors — and that kindness and compassion is alive and well in our community.

Thanks to all who organized the evening, to all who attended, and for the love, prayers and support that you all have bestowed on my sons and me. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Lorinne Dowd, Lynbrook
