Lynbrook, East Rockaway to host Memorial Day ceremonies

Posted

Lynbrook will hold its annual Memorial Day parade in person this year and also host a movie in the park, while East Rockaway will host a service instead of a parade.

The parade  will run its usual route, starting at the McDonald’s on Merrick Road on Monday at 9:45 a.m. and making its way to the Doughboy Monument at Saperstein Plaza.

As usual, the parade will include the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Members of both veterans’ groups will be gathering at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall all at about 9:15 a.m. for a ceremony honoring the bravery of veterans.

Lynbrook is also hosting a free outdoor cinema event where it will show “The Sandlot” at 9 p.m. in Greis Park on Saturday. Gates open at 8 p.m., and attendance is limited to 300 people. Attendees are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and the event is open to Village of Lynbrook residents only. Tickets can be found at Lynbrook.recdesk.com.

Several speakers, including Mayor Alan Beach, are expected to pay tribute to the village’s military heroes of yesterday and today on Monday. Taps will be played, and a contingent of the Marine Corps League will serve as the color guard for the event.

In lieu of a parade, East Rockaway will host a Memorial Day service on Monday at Memorial Park at 11 a.m.
