Members of the Lynbrook Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Company, also known as MEDCO, celebrated its 30th anniversary with a block party at the firehouse on Vincent Avenue on April 1.

Outgoing Capt. Kaitlan Curran was also honored for her service as captain the past two years.

Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach was on hand for the celebration along with village trustees Mike Hawkhurst, Ann Marie Reardon, Robert Boccio and Laura Ryder.  They presented two citations to Curran, one for her service as captain and one marking the Emergency Medical Company’s 30th anniversary.

Other dignitaries in attendance and who also presented proclamations were Nassau County Legislator William Gaylor, and Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.

The Emergency Medical Company was formed on Sept. 23, 1991 from the former Emergency Relief Squad, also called the Rescue Squad, then a Fire Department unit, which was originally formed some 62 years before by a Lynbrook doctor who followed the fire department around in a station wagon to give first aid to residents.

In December 2002, 11 years after the company was formed, and after many fundraisers and other efforts by its members and others, a warehouse on Vincent Avenue was purchased and turned into a new firehouse.  Previously as in the past years, Engine Company No. 1’s firehouse on Carpenter Avenue and Hose Company’s firehouse on Blake Avenue stored the Rescue Squad’s ambulance and rescue truck.

After renovation of the new Vincent Avenue firehouse, the building was dedicated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 16, 2003 and became the Lynbrook Fire Department’s sixth firehouse.

The Medical company responds from the firehouse with two ambulances.

Their Vincent Avenue firehouse and the street in front of the firehouse was where the anniversary celebration and block party were held.
