Lynbrook Police Chief Neve suspended

Neve to go two weeks without pay, says mayor

Lynbrook Chief of Police Joseph Neve, 57, has been suspended without pay for two weeks from the Lynbrook Police Department by Mayor Brian Curran, who cited “behavior unbecoming to a police officer” as the reason for the suspension.

Neve, who has been with the department for 32 years and was made chief in 1991, will not be able to return to work until Apr. 13, according Curran. This stems from an incident that occurred two weeks ago at a house on Charing Cross that involved what Curran called a “landlord-tenant dispute.”

According to Curran, Neve purchased a house on Charing Cross and sought to evict the person living there — reportedly the person who sold him the house — giving her 24 hours to remove herself from the premises. She made numerous calls to the Lynbrook Police Department, complaining that she believed that, under the law, she had 30 days to get out. Curran said that the argument did not include any threat of physical violence.

”We suspended him for two reasons,” said Curran. “I expect a lot out of my supervisors, both inside and out, and he did not remove himself from the situation.”

Curran was not sure if Neve was living there at the time or had planned to move in. “As the chief, we told him that he exercised poor judgment, and because of that he was suspended.”
