The September 11th Families Association named teacher Susan Lindner one of five national recipients of the Tribute WTC Visitor Center Annual Teacher Award. This award was given in recognition of teachers who have made an outstanding effort to discuss the events of September 11th with their students and to create projects that helped students understand their relationship to these events.

Lindner was recognized for her untiring efforts to establish a September 11th Memorial Garden at Waverly Park. She involved students in the creation of this unique outdoor classroom that honors the memory of those lost, while providing a peaceful place where students can read, have lessons and enjoy nature.

Lindner and the other award recipients were honored at a ceremony at the Tribute Center, 120 Liberty Street, New York. They received a private tour of the Tribute Center conducted by one of the founders, a retired firefighter who lost his firefighter son on September 11th. In addition, Mrs. Lindner received a $500 gift for her school, donated by the September 11th Family Foundations. She hopes to use the money toward the purchase of a flagpole for the garden. Waverly Park School will also be receiving a piece of steel recovered from Ground Zero.

“This award recognizes the important role our schools play in promoting peace by sustaining the meaning of September 11th,” said Lindner. “It has been a very moving experience for me to be here today. Every visitor to New York should make plans to come to the Tribute Center to learn more about the people who have made it their mission to ensure that the victims of 9/11 will never be forgotten.”

To serve as an inspiration to educators who are seeking ways to bring the events of September 11th into their curriculum, information about all the honorees and their projects will be posted at www.tributewtc.org” www.tributewtc.org.
