Warmer weather, longer days and more free time make summer the perfect season to try something new. For anyone looking to dip their feet in the water — metaphorically or literally — the Lynbrook recreation department offers dozens of programs for all ages.

Nothing says summer like a swim in the pool, and Lynbrook’s is open every day. The village pool in Greis Park offers membership to all Lynbrook residents, and discounted rates for children, senior citizens, veterans, and firefighters. It offers more than a much-needed way for everyone to cool down from the hot summer sun —  it’s also home to the Lynbrook Village Pool swim teams. The swim teams have grown tremendously in recent years, boasting nearly 200 members compared to the 40 they had when just starting out. The swim team is an ideal way to become a stronger, safer swimmer while having a way to socialize outside of school.

The Recreation Department also sponsors an impressive variety of art programs. Adult painting classes run through the end of August. Whether you’re a Picasso-level artist or an amateur trying something new, the paint class is a way to explore your creative side while meeting new people. Art programs for kids of all ages are also available, from arts and crafts for preschoolers to tie-dye for teenagers and everything in between. Some, like the tie-dye classes, are one-day events, while other programs run through the end of the summer. Whether you want to hone a new skill or to spend an afternoon trying something fun, the Recreation Department offers the art program you’re looking for.

For kids who don’t want to choose between exercise and art, dance is the perfect option. the Recreation Department offers ballet, hip hop, and contemporary dance programs for different age ranges. The dance programs aren’t only fun — they’re successful and wildly popular. The June 11 spring recital, “Night at the Movies,” saw the Howard T. Herber Middle School auditorium full of delighted family members as hundreds of kids took to the stage to show off their skills. The event was both heartwarming and impressive to everyone who witnessed it, including village trustee Ann Marie Reardon.

“It was amazing to see all the effort they put in,” Reardon said at the June 19 village meeting, “and just how many kids were doing it.”

“And of course, they were adorable,” she added.
