New Assembly district maps keep Lynbrook virtually intact

Much to the relief of Lynbrook residents and village officials, all of Lynbrook would once again be unified as one Assembly district, according to the new maps released by a redistricting task force recently.

Assemblyman Brian Curran and Lynbrook officials successfully lobbied to keep the village together in one district.

The new maps, released by the New York State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment, are mandated every 10 years after the release of census results, to address population shifts. Across the state, each new district would have about 129,000 residents.

“I was very happy that LATFOR ... was receptive to our plea that Lynbrook remain united and under the watchful eye of Assemblyman Brian Curran,” said Lynbrook Mayor William J. Hendrick, referring to the task force. “I’m very pleased, and look forward to continuing to work closely with hin.”

The new maps received Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s approval in a deal that had the Legislature agree to put forward a constitutional amendment to reform the redistricting process.

Initial maps proposed by the legislative task force would have split Lynbrook between two Assembly districts. The southern part of the village would have been with Valley Stream in a new district, while the northern half would have stayed in Curran’s redrawn district.

The new proposal puts all of Lynbrook back into one district, which Curran said he is happy about. “The second set of maps gave me back Lynbrook,” he said. “Unfortunately, I lost most of Valley Stream.”

If re-elected, Curran, a Lynbrook resident, would shift from the 14th District to the 21st, and would still represent some of the Valley Stream school community, including a small section of Lynbrook whose residents attend Valley Stream District 24 schools. Curran said he wants to continue hosting programs in those schools, such as the summer reading program and the holiday hockey tournament.

One challenger, Jeffrey Friedman, has already announced his candidacy to challenge Curran in November.
