Rockin' Mules a determined bunch

Coming off a difficult season that saw the Malverne/East Rockaway boys’ soccer team pick up just one victory, the Rockin’ Mules are hoping to take steps in the right direction in 2011. With a roster that is relatively short, Malverne/East Rockaway hopes that being long on determination will help to right the ship.

The Rockin’ Mules aren’t off to the start they were hoping for, dropping their first three matches, but Christian Soto, in his fourth season as head coach for Malverne/East Rockaway, knows that it will take time to build the program to a level of respectability.

“We have a nice core of players, but we’re not very deep,” Soto said. “A lack of depth is definitely a weakness, but we’re going to look to be competitive. The guys put a lot of time in during the offseason to prepare for this year. Hopefully, we’ll have some success.”

The Rockin’ Mules are inexperienced in goal, but hope that junior Zach Borodini will continue to improve. Borodini had four saves in a 5-3 loss to West Hempstead. Michael Lobelle, who had six saves in the game, will also see time in goal.

Senior captain John Neckles brings experience and talent to the backline for Malverne/East Rockaway. The four-year varsity performer, who is doubling as the kicker for East Rockaway’s football team, is a solid sweeper who sees the field well, and does a nice job distributing the ball.

Senior Nate Williamson provides athleticism and versatility. Williamson’s ability to play terrific man on man defense makes him valuable on defense at stopper or sweeper. His skills on the offensive end enable him to fill in at forward as well. Junior Vincent Arena has held his own on the defensive end.

Senior Pat McCarty leads a talented group of midfielders. McCarty has excellent soccer IQ and a knack for finding open teammates. Senior Josh Ortiz is another midfielder who looks to distribute the ball. Ortiz’s versatility allows Soto to use him at forward when needed.
