East Side, West Side, all around the canal

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony Santino have taken on an upgrade project in Bay Park that will enhance Grand Canal and refurbish East Boulevard — along with three other local roadways.

Murray and Santino are sponsoring a measure that will fund the engineering and design work for a new bulkhead along the eastern side of Grand Canal, as well as some other sections of this local waterway.

“We’re excited to be taking the first step to adding new luster to Bay Park’s Grand Canal,” said Murray. The proposed reconstruction encompasses the entire east side of the canal, along East Boulevard, the north section of the bulkhead along North Boulevard and two small sections of the west side of the canal where Court Street West and Evans Street West dead end at the canal.

“Improving and maintaining infrastructure like East Boulevard is important for those who drive and walk along this local thoroughfare,” Santino said. “Reconstructing the bulkhead will fortify the adjacent roadway.”

After the design and engineering work for the project is completed the town will pursue necessary approvals and permits to begin work from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. With the cooperation of the other governmental jurisdictions, the Town anticipates groundbreaking for the project to take place in the fall of next year.

“In difficult economic times, it’s important to move forward with government projects that enhance our communities, create jobs and stimulate the economy,” Murray said that she believes it’s important to move forward with government projects to enhance communities, create jobs, and stimulate the economy.

“We believe that this bulkhead reconstruction project will do just that,” Murray said. “Bay Park is a great community and upgrades like this will help to keep it that way. I think neighbors will enjoy taking a stroll along the renewed canal side.”
