Trees 'spring' in East Rockaway

Planting on Arbor Day

Posted

Joining in an Arbor Day celebration, officials, community members and Capital One Bank employees planted two trees on April 29. The trees were planted next to Capital One Bank on Main Street. Though it was a hot day, attendees were all smiles while they planted the seeds of tomorrow today.

“We plant to add to the air quality and aesthetically how our village looks,” said Rose Trum, chairperson of the Beatification, Tree and Garden Committee. “We try to show the village that we do care.” She added that the trees are a great help to the environment, and they reduce temperature and keep energy usage down.

The committee, along with the village’s Department of Public Works, help plant flowers and shrubs every Spring. Debbie Hirschberg, bank manager and village’s Chamber of Commerce president, believes there is a need for trees. “I think its great for the village to do for Arbor Day,” she said. Two years ago, Hirschberg donated the trees for Capital One.

Mayor Francis Lenahan, along with board trustees Stanley Lombardo and Ed Corrado were on hand to help plant. “Thank you to Capital One and Debbie Hirschberg and Rose Trum for contributing to the beautification of our village,” he said. “And thanks to the trustees.”
