HERALD ENDORSEMENT

Vote for Gaylor in 6th Legislative District

Posted

After more than 20 years as a county legislator, Francis Becker is stepping down, and he’s leaving big shoes to fill.

C. William Gaylor, a Republican from Becker’s hometown of Lynbrook, is running against Jim Paymar, a Democrat from Rockville Centre. Gaylor is an attorney, and spent 24 years in the Army. Paymar is a former journalist who now runs his own communications company. Both candidates have great ideas and a vision for the future of the county.

Paymar is more of an idealist, and was a little short on specifics. In a discussion with the Herald editorial board, he had no shortage of ideas about what the county should do, but not nearly enough about how to get them done.

Gaylor appears to be a better fit for the County Legislature. He has a wealth of experience as a lawyer, and seems to be honest and sincere. We hope he’ll follow through on his pledges to examine the county contracting process and other county practices, and to balance the budget.

Our only reservation was that in his interview with our editors, Gaylor came across as a bit standoffish. Dealing with constituents isn’t easy, and we hope he approaches that ceaseless interaction with patience and an open mind, and can be a good listener. We encourage voters to give him their support.
