The Clara H. Carlson Elementary School Auditorium was dedicated to the late Lucinda M. Zorlenzan, a former sixth-grade teacher and longtime Elmont resident, at the Elmont Board of Education meeting on Oct. 11. A plaque with Zorlenzan’s picture and a quote from her favorite song, “Wind Beneath My Wings,” will soon be a permanent fixture in the auditorium to inspire for students.

Before students in the Sewanhaka Central High, Franklin Square Union Free and Elmont Union Free school districts headed back to school for the 2011-12, state test scores assessing 3rd- to 8th-grade students’ English Language Arts and math scores from the 2010-11 school year were released. Locally, the results — released by the New York State Education Department in August — vary widely.

At the Elmont Memorial Library Board of Trustees’ Reorganization Meeting July 21, Joanne Mazzeo was named the board’s new president. Mazzeo, an Elmont resident for nearly 30 years, was first elected to the board in 2007 to fill the remaining three years of Brian Lynn’s vacated seat. She served that three-year term — two years as vice president — and ran again in 2010, winning a five-year term.

Seven years ago, Franklin Square resident Inga Krevatas helped create the first-ever autism program for the Franklin Square Union Free School District. Krevatas' twin daughters, Sophia and Alexa, were born with autism, and she wanted to ensure they received specialized teaching in their home district — not outside of it.
