An ‘egg-citing egg-speriment’ at Covert Avenue

Covert Avenue School sixth-graders took to the front lawn of their school during an Egg Drop experiment that reinforced their studies in kinetic and potential energy.

As part of the experiment, sixth-grade teachers tasked students with creating a structure that would protect an egg from breaking during a 20-foot drop. The children worked together in teams and were encouraged to use recycled materials for their structures with the ultimate goal of finding a way to absorb, reduce or defer the energy created by the drop.

At the Egg Drop, students watched with excitement as teacher Robert Mugno dropped each egg structure from a school window, all while hoping their egg wouldn’t crack. The creativity of each group of students was evident as plastic cups, toilet paper rolls, cotton balls and shoeboxes fell from the sky in an attempt to protect the eggs from breaking. Some students even created parachutes to help break the fall.

According to Mugno, the experiment promoted teamwork, while giving students an opportunity to see their classroom learning come to life.
