Elmont Memorial High School held its Class of 2023 graduation ceremony at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University on June 25.

Senior class president Samantha Stewart welcomed graduates and guests at the beginning of the ceremony. She spoke about the several “firsts” the Class of 2023 experienced together, such as adapting to school life during a global pandemic.

Valedictorian Mohammed Rahman took students down memory lane during his speech, citing moments he said will stay with them for years to come.

Salutatorian Kimone Walker spoke about the importance of acknowledging and showing appreciation for the people who supported the graduates during their high school journeys.

The Class of 2023 is Elmont Memorial High School principal Kevin Dougherty’s final graduating class, as he is not returning to the district next year.

During his speech, he had the students — who he described as “kings” and “queens” — repeat positive affirmations.

The principal got emotional talking about the three statements he never wants the Class of 2023 to forget: they are a king or queen, they are powerful and they are enough.

And there is an “army of love” behind them every step of the way.

“Tomorrow will be a new day with new challenges and it is imperative to you’re your daily reminders of who you are and the power you hold inside,” Dougherty said to the graduates. “It is not the number of days on this Earth, but the manner in which we live these days that will matter in the end.”
