Elmont principal Kevin Dougherty announces departure

Elmont Memorial High School principal Kevin Dougherty informed the Elmont community he is stepping down from his position at the end of the school year.

The beloved principal sent out an email to parents, students and staff on April 5 announcing his departure, effective June 30.

“The Elmont community has been amazing to me and my family over the last 8 years,” Dougherty said in the email. “I will cherish the memories that we have — I look forward to staying in touch and hearing about the amazing things our outstanding scholars go on to achieve.”

The Sewanhaka Central High School District sent out a statement thanking Dougherty for his service to the community and innovative programs he introduced to the high school during his time as principal.

The district said they are going to start looking to fill the Elmont High School principal position for the 2023-24 school year “as soon as possible.”

Dougherty had been placed on an unexplained leave of absence right before the start of the 2022-23 school year, in what administration officials described as a “sabbatical.” The move sparked protests among parents and students, who demanded answers about his sudden removal. Dougherty was reinstated to his position on Oct. 11.
