Football season kicks off

The Nassau County High School football season kicks off today with five games, including defending Conference I champion Freeport hosting Oceanside at 4:30 p.m. The Red Devils went 10-2 in 2008 and captured the Rutgers Cup, awarded to the best team in the county. In other action on Thursday, Baldwin visits Port Washington in Conference I and Lawrence hosts Manhasset.

Elmont begins defense of its Conference II title on Friday when it hosts Long Beach at 4:30 p.m. Around the corner at the same time, Carey takes on Kennedy. Under the lights, Conference I newcomer Calhoun opens at Farmingdale at 6:30 p.m., and Conference II runner-up Hewlett takes on Glen Cove at 7 p.m.

Highlighting Saturday’s games is a local clash between East Rockaway and Malverne at 1:30 p.m. The Mules are home for the head coaching debut of former standout Kito Lockwood.
