Renowned local track star Valencia Hannon, a senior at Elmont Memorial High School, placed first among public school runners in the 55-meter race on March 3, at the state indoor track championships, held at Cornell University.

Hannon placed third overall in the 55-meter finals with a 7.22 — .07 seconds behind the winning time. The tournament marked her first indoor state championship title.

“I had a lot on my mind while I was getting into my blocks,” she said about the race last Saturday. “My goal was to win both state and federation, but I was happy with how the day finished.”

Hannon is planning to compete at the indoor national meet in the 200-meter race, as well as at the outdoor state championships in the spring, in the 100-meter race. Last June, she won the women’s 100-meter race at state, finishing in 11.88 seconds — a personal career record, as well as the fastest 100 in the state for 2011.

“I have nationals to focus on now,” Hannon said, adding, “The 200 is one of my favorite events, so I’m very excited about this weekend.”

According to Hannon, she won’t be finished with running upon graduating from Elmont Memorial. She recently decided to attend Clemson University in South Carolina, where she was offered a full scholarship for Division 1 Track and Field for fall 2012 admission. She plans study health science and minor in business at Clemson.
