A Hempstead man was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations on Sept. 7 in Franklin Square.

Nassau police pulled over a Hyundai Sonata at Hempstead Turnpike and Scherer Boulevard around 5 p.m. Thursday. When officers approached the car, it fled southbound and hit several parked vehicles in front of 207 Scherer Boulevard.

The driver, Robert Shivers, 18, of Terrace Avenue, Hempstead, tried to flee the scene on foot. However, injuries sustained when the car crashed hindered him.

Police struggled with Shivers briefly before he was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to treat his injuries. No other injuries were reported.

During the investigation, police recovered a loaded Ruger-57 semi-automatic handgun with six rounds of ammunition from the Sonata.

Shivers will be arraigned when medically practical.
