Honoring our hometown heroes

Several local organizations celebrate Veterans Day

Stewart Manor School held a Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 10, which was held in large part outdoors. Third-graders sang songs and recited poems, and older students performed musical pieces.

On Nov. 9, Covert Avenue School students sang several patriotic songs for residents and veterans, including “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Local veterans attended the performance, including Warren Montgomery, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1958, during World War II; and John Sullivan, who served in the U.S. Army with the Second Battalion, Second Armored Cavalry, from 1958 to 1961 — also during WWII. Sullivan was stationed in Germany, about 20 miles from the German-Czechoslovakian border.

The annual Elmont Veterans Day Parade was held last Friday at 10 a.m., beginning at the American Legion Hall Post 1033 — 60 Hill Ave. in Elmont — and continuing to Veterans Square, located on Covert Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. A Veterans Day ceremony for veterans and local residents was held after the parade.
