H.S. Football: Week 3

Posted

The first varsity game on Long Beach’s new turf field and a local showdown in the Five Towns highlights the Week 3 football action in Nassau County.

Long Beach, which split its first two Conference II games, hosts Kennedy (1-1) at L.B. Middle School on Friday at 7 p.m. The Marines and Cougars each boast a strong ground attack with Damon Whitfield and Joey Karo, respectively.

Also on Friday under the lights, Baldwin (1-1) is home for the first time in 2010. The Bruins host struggling Port Washington in a Conference I game at 7 p.m.

A handful of locals play their home openers on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. East Meadow (2-0), which comes off a wild come-from-behind Conference I victory at Farmingdale, gets a visit from MacArthur. Rivals Mepham and Calhoun meet on the Colts’ field in Conference II, Sewanhaka hosts South Side in Conference III, and Malverne entertains Clarke in Conference IV.

Two of the biggest games on Long Island this weekend are Lawrence (2-0) at Hewlett (2-0), and Garden City (2-0) at Carey (2-0).

Led by the brother tandem of Ryan and Tyler Fredericks, who scored six touchdowns between them in the first two games, Lawrence’s offense has picked up where it left off last season. The Golden Tornadoes have 84 points in two games. Hewlett, with quarterback Alex Kahn and a deep rushing attack, piled up 69 points in two games.

Five different players scored touchdowns for Carey last week in its 34-0 win at Roslyn, and the Seahawks put up 38 points in their opener against New Hyde Park. The offense will have its work cut out against Garden City, which blanked Mepham in Week 1 and allowed only a touchdown against Calhoun in Week 2.

Other interesting matchups include three-time defending Conference IV champion Seaford (2-0) visiting East Rockaway (2-0), and defending Conference I champ Freeport (2-0) hosting Farmingdale.
