H.S. Football: Week 5

Posted

The second half of the Nassau County High School football season begins this weekend and the biggest matchup on the docket takes place in Lynbrook. The Owls host Sewanhaka in a Conference III showdown of surprising 4-0 teams at 3 p.m.

The Indians and first-year head coach George Kasimatis have enjoyed quite an uprising. They've won every game by at least 13 points and come off a 42-0 blowout victory over North Shore. They were seeded No. 11 in the preseason. Lynbrook, coached by Steve LoCicero and seeded fifth, opened everyone's eyes by beating No. 1 Lawrence on the road in Week 2 and defending county champion Bethpage, also on the road, last Saturday.

On the playoff bubble, Bethpage (1-3) is sure to have its hands full with Lawrence. The Golden Tornadoes (3-1) are Long Island's highest-scoring team, averaging 45.7 points per game, and have scored 48 or more on three occasions.

Defending Conference II champ Elmont will renew its rivalry with Carey. Both teams are 3-1. The Spartans beat the Seahawks in a playoff semifinal game last November. Also in Conference II, Mepham travels to Great Neck South looking to move above .500 after going winless in 2008. The Pirates beat Roslyn in Week 1 and snapped a two-game slide with a win at New Hyde Park last Saturday. In Conference I, Baldwin (2-2) will try to recover from a deflating loss at Syosset when it hosts surprising Hicksville, another undefeated 11th seed. Under the lights, Oceanside is home to East Meadow at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are coming off wins. The Sailors blew out Plainview and the Jets knocked off Farmingdale in overtime.
