Posted

The high school football season turned the corner last week and Nassau saw four teams knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten, leaving Freeport, Massapequa, Garden City, Lynbrook, Seaford and Roosevelt with unblemished marks through five games.

Freeport, the defending Conference I champion, hits the road this Saturday to take on red-hot East Meadow, a 48-21 winner at Oceanside in Week 5. The Jets have won four straight after losing their opener at Uniondale. Oceanside, 2-3, has some work to do to get into the playoffs but can take a huge step with a win at Hicksville, which comes off its first loss of the year, 20-18 at Baldwin.

In Conference II, Long Beach is home to Garden City, which has outscored opponents by an eye-popping 166-0 margin. The Trojans romped in last week's showdown with previously undefeated Wantagh, 34-0. The Marines are 2-3 after beating New Hyde Park. Seeded No. 12 in Conference II after a winless 2008 campaign, Mepham has its sights set on the playoffs and aims for its fourth win of the year when Valley Stream Central visits.

Hewlett faces an undefeated Conference III rival for the second time in as many weeks when it hosts Lynbrook. The Bulldogs stunned Plainedge last Saturday, 14-13, for their third win and the Owls dealt Sewanhaka its first loss, 20-13.

In Conference IV, East Rockaway comes off a thrilling 27-26 victory over Island Trees that saw Brian Lantz deny Dan Bartlett on a two-point conversion try with no time on the clock. The Rocks, 3-2, will have their hands full with visiting Seaford, which ranks second in the county behind only Lawrence in points scored with 215. Another local matchup has Clarke, 1-4, visiting Malverne, 2-3.

All games start at 2 p.m.
