The Long Island Philharmonic is making music once again. The region’s beloved orchestra presents the Islip Arts Council’s annual free concert, a yearly summertime ritual for music lovers.
The orchestra, under the baton of David Stewart Wiley, is ready for a grand evening of music-making, on July 14, at 8 p.m. Maestro Wiley, music director and conductor, leads the orchestra in a concert of American classics. The program includes selections from “The Patriot,” “Satchmo! A Tribute to Louis Armstrong,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Irving Berlin: A Symphonic Portrait.”
The concert, “A Salute to the Armed Forces of the U.S.A,” is being performed in honor of returning veterans and all the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following the rousing finale, a glittering display of fireworks will light up the night sky.
As always, concertgoers are urged to arrive early to this popular event. Many visitors bring family and friends for picnicking throughout the day. Everyone is urged to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to Long Island Cares. Admission is free. There is a $10 vehicle use fee in effect until 5 p.m.; after 5 p.m. a $10 donation is requested.
The orchestra’s summer season continues on Friday, Aug. 10 at Eisenhower Park’s Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre.
