Police announced early last week that an arrest has been made in a stabbing that took place on Elmont Memorial High School property in early September.

On Sept. 3, at 6:40 p.m., Fifth Precinct police officers were dispatched to Elmont Memorial High School's track field, at 555 Ridge Road in Elmont, to break up a fight that had been called in to the precinct.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered that a 17-year-old local student had been stabbed once in the torso, and was lying on the ground bleeding in the middle of a group of about 20 young men, all running throughout the scene and fighting with one another.

Once the group of young men saw the police, they fled the scene, some running away on foot, and others piling into a gray minivan and a black Honda sedan, a source said.

Detectives are still investigating the cause of the fight. Emergency crews were called to the scene, but the victim was taken to a local hospital in a private car without any life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

On Monday morning, however, detectives from the Fifth Precinct announced the arrest of 18-year-old Kervin Cethoute, of Colfax Street in Queens Village. Police believe he is responsible for the stabbing of the 17-year-old. Cethoute was arrested Monday morning and charged with second-degree gang assault. He was arraigned Tuesday at First District Criminal Court in Hempstead.

Police are still investigating other aspects of the crime which took place on Elmont's track. Anyone with any information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS(8477).

All calls and information will be kept confidential.
