Seahawks get best of Spartans

You won’t find an offensive lineman’s name in the box score, and his photo generally won’t make the Sunday paper, but anyone who witnessed Carey’s triumph over Elmont last Saturday knows much of the glory should go to the boys in the trenches after the Seahawks’ convincing 24-12 win.

Senior Greg D’Arienzo ran for 115 yards on 32 carries to lead an offense that rushed for a season-high 258 yards as Carey improved to 4-1 in Nassau Conference II. Junior quarterback Kyle Zahradka added 79 yards on 14 carries and threw a touchdown pass.

The effort from the guys up front wasn’t lost on Carey coach Mike Stanley. “To be able to control the line of scrimmage and eat up so much of the clock was huge,” Stanley said. “This group works very well together. To keep Elmont’s offense off the field, with all those weapons, was a big key to this win. They’ve been able to do that to us in the past, so it was nice to be on the other side for a change.”

The offensive line, composed of seniors Mike Lisi, Al Gentile, Pat Castel, Mike Babich and junior Drew Zahradka, kept the Spartans’ big, physical defensive unit off balance all afternoon with different looks and blocking schemes. The Seahawks ran the ball 60 times.

Both teams got off to shaky starts with fumbles on back-to-back kickoffs. The opening kickoff resulted in two points for Carey when an Elmont ball carrier was tackled in the end zone for a safety after both teams fought for the loose ball.

After recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Elmont found the end zone when senior quarterback Diashawn Miller took it in from a yard out. Miller scored again later in the quarter from 40 yards out, his sixth touchdown of the season, to give the Spartans a 12-2 lead.
