A 14-year-old female student was struck by a vehicle on Dutch Broadway near Virginia Avenue in Elmont while walking to Elmont Memorial High School on Dec. 20 at 6:55 a.m., according to Nassau County's 5th Precinct.

Police said that the student, a ninth-grader at Elmont Memorial High School whose identity has not been released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and was immediately transported by Nassau County police ambulance to the Winthrop-University Medical Center.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Dutch Broadway when it struck the young woman, who was crossing the Dutch Broadway-Virginia Avenue intersection in a northwest direction, not within the lines of the crosswalk.

Dutch Broadway, between Keegan Street and Tuxedo Drive, was shut down briefly, following the accident.

John Capozzi, principal of Elmont Memorial, said in December that he spoke with the student's father, who said she is expected to make a full recovery. On Jan. 10, Capozzi told the Herald that the student is still recovering from the accident, and recently visited Elmont Memorial High School, visiting with him and the school counselor. He described her as "doing well and being in good spirits," and said that she is expected to make a full recovery.

Editor's note: It was reported yesterday that a child was struck by a vehicle in this accident. This information was reported incorrectly to the Herald.
