An AP Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, Julian Clemente is Elmont Memorial High School’s 2011 valedictorian. He was inducted into the Math Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and also participated in several clubs, including Mathletes, Class of 2011 and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Throughout high school, Clemente dedicated much of his time to music, playing for the Senior High Jazz Band and marching band, and becoming section leader for the alto saxophone players, who play at the Senior High concerts, home football games, Newsday marching band festivals and the Columbus Day Parade in New York City.

In his free time, Clemente tutors other students and volunteers at food drives for the St. Boniface Youth Group.

Clemente is graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma, with honors. He will be attending New York University Polytechnic, where he plans to study aeronautical or mechanical engineering.

Angelica Melo is Elmont Memorial’s 2011 salutatorian. Her high marks earned her the title of vice president of the World Language Society, and gained her admittance into the Senior High National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society. She earned the highest prize, El Premio de Oro, in the National Spanish Exam, and received a perfect score on the AP Spanish Exam, becoming an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Melo also studied other foreign languages — AP Italian and Independent Study AP French — and was awarded the Brown Book Award at Elmont’s 11th Grade Awards Ceremony. She participated in several school clubs, including SADD and the varsity badminton team, and served as class president of the Latter-Day Saints Seminary. Outside of school, she has volunteered at an ophthalmologist’s office.

Melo wants to become a forensic anthropologist, and plans to study at George Washington University in the fall.
