The National Weather Service has a winter storm warning in effect from midnight on Feb. 1 to 6 a.m. on Feb. 2, and an updated forecast has snow accumulations ranging from 12 to 20 inches to fall across Long Island creating blizzard-like conditions in some areas resulting in hazardous road conditions.

Winds gusting to 50 mph could bring down tree branches and there is expected to be a mixture of sleet and rain, especially on the South Shore.

As a result, students in the Franklin Square and Elmont school districts will be learning remotely on Monday, the superintendents poted on their respective websites.  Anyone in need of technical assistance in the Franklin Square School District should email parenthelp@fsufsd.org, which building administrators will monitor throughout the day.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District, meanwhile, will be closed, and no remote instruction will take place.

Nassau Inter-County Express/NICE Bus advises riders to prepare for service delays, detours and suspensions during the upcoming snowstorm, officials stated in a news release.

If roads become impassable or visibility is diminished, bus routes may be temporarily suspended for safety reasons, officials said. Road conditions for routes servicing the North Shore are likely to be most affected based on experiences during prior storms, and passengers should expect potential impacts across the entire service area.

Riders are encouraged to check with NICE Bus during and after the storm for service changes.
