By TONY BELLISSIMO

Saturday was Homecoming for Hewlett, but Lawrence quarterback John Kinder was king. The Syracuse-bound Kinder led a punishing ground attack with 176 yards and five touchdowns to spark the Golden Tornadoes to a 52-22 Conference III victory over the Bulldogs, who led by a point late in the second quarter.

Lawrence (2-1) pounded out an incredible 500 yards rushing and outscored Hewlett 28-0 in the second half after an evenly played first half. Senior Kenny Barnett added 188 yards and a touchdown and sophomore Ryan Fredricks ripped off 136 yards on just eight carries. Senior Jason Canales scored twice for the Bulldogs (1-2). He caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Alex Kahn and added a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Garden City 28, Elmont 0

In what most felt would be a classic high school football game between two unbeaten teams, top-seeded Garden City thoroughly defeated defending Nassau Conference II champion Elmont 28-0 to put a damper on Homecoming Day at Elmont High School on Saturday. Junior running back Stephen Jahelka ran for 109 yards on 17 carries to lead the Trojans, who improved to 3-0.

Garden City’s heralded defensive unit, which hasn’t yielded a point in 2009, was dominant. Elmont was held to 99 yards in total offense and just a pair of first downs. The Spartans didn’t pick up a first down until the 5:15 mark of the third quarter. Juniors Jaquan Smith and Charles Dimoh played well defensively for Elmont, which slipped to 2-1. Isaiah Jackson and Diashawn Miller both had interceptions for the Spartans.

East Meadow 49, Port Washington 0

East Meadow celebrated its Homecoming with touchdowns on six of its seven first-half drives and cruised to a 49-0 Conference I victory over Port Washington on Saturday. The win, the Jets second in three games, was secure by halftime, as the starting unit only worked a half day but still managed to put in a full day's worth of production.

East Meadow's defense dominated the point of attack from the opening series, allowing the Vikings to rack up just 13 yards of offense on eight first-half drives. “The defense set the tone of the game,” coach Vin Mascia said. “They were all over [Port Washington]. I'm very happy about that.”
