School bus hits woman
A school bus struck and killed a woman at the intersection of Park Street and Vernon Avenue in Atlantic Beach at 6:55 a.m., according to Nassau County police.
The woman has been identified as Gloria Moreira, 56, of Atlantic Beach. Moreira was crossing Park Street when she was hit by the bus that was traveling east in the right lane, police said.
There were no children on the bus. Moreira was pronounced dead at the scene.
"She was catching the bus to go to work," said resident Eileen Adler, referring to Moreira.
This portion of the roadway would make for a good place for a redlight camera to catch motorists speeding through the area, Adler added.
In the immediate area where Moreira was struck there is a village speed sign of 15 mph and further down the roadway there is a posted sign of 30 mph.
The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone with information to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-8477. All calls are kept confidential.
