Cooking away the storm in Meadowmere Park
(Page 3 of 3)
Jeffrey Bessen/Herald
Meadowmere Park Fire Chief Kevin Carrero and members of the department have served breakfast, lunch and dinner to nearly 70 residents each day at the firehouse since Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island.

Along with its inflatable boat, one of the Meadowmere department’s four emergency vehicles was damaged, along with some firefighting gear, despite the fact that it was put on higher shelves. Nearly seven feet of water surged through the first floor of the firehouse before the flooding receded.

Despite the losses, Carrero and Fire District Commissioner Stephen MacFadden said the firehouse would remain open to residents as long as it’s needed. “We’re not worrying about the money right now,” MacFadden said.
