A tournament that introduced Brooke Henderson, Keegan Bradley and Paula Creamer to the golf world will be played at the Woodmere Club in Woodmere on Wednesday, July 20 and Thursday, July 21.

The qualifying round for the 18th annual Lessing’s American Junior Golf Association (AGJA) Classic will take place on Sunday, July 17 at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island, then switches to the Woodmere Club on Tuesday, July 19 for a practice round. At 4 p.m. on Thursday there will be an awards presentation.

This year’s event showcases 84 talented golfers, boys and girls 12 to 19, who aim to win college golf scholarships, while competing in 54 holes of stroke play. In addition to the competitive golf, the tournament provides a classroom environment, where the junior golfers receive training in etiquette, service and conduct as they work on their game and display their talents.

The AJGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of young men and women who want to attend college on golf scholarships. More than 150 corporate sponsors support the association and nearly 60 percent of the group’s budget is generated from those sponsors and individual donations.

Lessings, Inc. is the oldest family-owned, continuously operated food service company in the U.S. The Great River-based firm has served as the tournament’s sponsor since 1999.
