Lloyd Fetner, a Staten Island real estate developer who was a longtime Five Towns resident, died on Sept. 6. He was 78.
Fetner was born in Brooklyn to Hyman and Dora Fetner on Sept. 9, 1936. He met Barbara, the love of his life, on a blind date in December of 1956. Barbara’s was impressed with Fetner upon their first meeting. “He was gorgeous,” she said. “He had the most beautiful blue eyes, and was an even tempered all-around nice guy.” The two were engaged in September of 1957 and married on June 15, 1958.
He graduated from Brooklyn College in the same year and started working as a land broker. He earned a MAI membership designation as a real estate appraiser for professionals who can provide a an array of services ranging from evaluations to investment decisions.
Lloyd met his eventual real estate partner, Morton Meltzer, in 1975 and the two had a decades-long partnership building homes on Staten Island. Barbara worked with Lloyd, both in the office and as the designer for their model homes. It was during Staten Island’s population growth in the mid 1980s when Fetner, who worked with Avon at Huguenot Village, helped develop its first townhouse properties. He retired in 1998.
The Fetners were longtime residents of the Five Towns, raising their family in Woodmere and then Lawrence. Lloyd coached Little League, was a board member of Temple Israel of Lawrence and served as president of both the New York City and New York State builders associations.

He and Barbara were both avid golfers and over the years belonged to Middle Bay, Inwood and Seawane country clubs where Lloyd held multiple positions on the club’s boards. Fetner also enjoyed playing cards with his friends, or as he would so often put it, “going to work,” said Fetner’s daughter-in-law, Beth Fetner. Meaning he would win money.
The Fetners moved to Rockville Centre in 2000. “They enjoyed all the village had to offer,” Beth said. “It also brought them closer to their children and grandchildren and allowed them the opportunity to meet a number of new friends.”
After several years, the couple moved to Boca Raton, Fla., where Fetner lived until his death. “Lloyd and Barbara were world travelers and through their travels he enjoyed photographing the many unusual sites along the way,” Beth said. “Lloyd’s office is lined with magnificent pictures of their travels together.”
In addition to his wife and daughter-in-law, he is survived by his son, Cliff (Beth), and daughter, Jana (Louis) Sheinker; and his four grandchildren, Daniel and Perri Fetner and Ethan and Michelle Sheinker.
“But most of all, Lloyd loved his family. He loved us so much, and he was so proud of every single one of us,” said his grandson Daniel in his eulogy. “Our tight-knit family is his and Grandma Barb’s doing. They instilled in us their values, their lessons and their wisdom. Our family is Lloyd’s most significant accomplishment, and Grandma Barbara is his crown jewel. Spending time with both of them together was the absolute best. They were a special couple.”
The graveside funeral was at Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale on Sept. 8.
