Sidewalk sale keeps Cedarhurst humming

There was something for everyone, according to Lucy Rosenthal, owner of 9 New York on Central Avenue, who said she modeled her store, which sells maternity clothes, after shops on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.
“The sale helps provide additional revenue to make room for new merchandise,” Rosenthal said. “At this point in the season, customers either want a bargain or are ready to buy the new season’s collection.”
Plum, which calls itself a resale boutique, discounted its designer clothes up to 50 percent, and featured an entire section of the store where clothing and household items were only $5 each. The nonprofit store receives its sale items as donations, and donates its proceeds to special education and vocational training programs in the community.
“It really depends on our donations, as far as what we have on our racks to sell,” said store operator Chava Lowy. “But we do get a nice variety of sizes and donations to our store. We’re a higher-end vintage store, and designer items are our specialty.”
Hewlett resident Nicole Obshatcko, who works at Plum, has shopped at the sale since she was a child. Obshatcko said she appreciates how much she has saved through the years, and is glad when patrons do, too. “Generally I’m happier for my customers, though,” she said. “[A] woman scored a basic black pair of Gucci heels at our store for $20. How awesome is that?”
