Snow forecast for the Five Towns

Posted

With up to six inches of snow and ice expected to fall on the Five Towns this weekend, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from midnight Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday. The storm is forecast to begin on Friday night as rain and wet snow changing to a wintry mix of snow and ice during the early hours of Saturday.

Area villages including Lawrence and Cedarhurst are gearing up for the snow. Officials said the plows are ready and crews are prepared to salt the roads. "We're ready, said, Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew Parise. "All the guys are on board."

Plowing isn’t typically done unless there is at least two inches of snow. Salting will be done to mitigate icing. The villages also monitor the weather reports to be aware of what to expect.

Unique to the Five Towns is the majority of businesses being closed on Saturday due to the Jewish Sabbath. That, according to officials, makes clearing the roads easier as there is much less traffic moving through the community. Sunday’s forecasts calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the high 30s.
